I can help you a bit with my list
Amarr: Punisher ( lasers and strong tank slow ) , Inquisitor ( missile boat good tank ) , Arbitrator ( ewar droneboat versatile ) , Omen ( can do "sniper" role needs very good skills ) , Maller ( strongest cruises with best tank but very slow ) , Harbinger ( versatile can be long range or short range laser boat with drones very strong tank but slow ) , Armaggeddon ( insane laser boat short to medium range damage with drones and great tank but slow ).
Caldary: Merlin ( missles and guns versatile ) , Grifin ( considered best ewar frigate) , Cormorant ( good gun boat for FW ) , MOA ( can do "sniper" role needs good skills ) , Caracal ( missle boat can do "long" or short range dps on bigger or smaller targets ) , Blackbird ( considered best ewar cruiser very good ) , Ferox ( good blaster boat nice damage ) , Drake ( can have insane tank or insane gank or much of both , active or pasive , long range or short range very good ship ) , Scorpion ( good ewar battleship shines in small gangs ).
Galante: Incursus ( versatile ) , Tristan ( strong damage ) , Catalyst ( can go solo and good in FW ) , Vexor ( gun and drone boat very good ) , Thorax ( considered best gun boat cruiser high close range dmg with drones ) , Brutix ( very good short range platform ) , Myrmidon ( drone ship with guns and active tank versatile ) , Dominix ( armor tanked drone boat with guns or with ewar versatile sturdy and can do serious dps ).
Minmatar: Rifter ( very good fast and versatile considered best frigate ) , Trasher ( considered best "pvp destroyer" ) , Stabber ( very fast ship focuses on dps and speed over tank ) , Rupture ( very slow ship focuses on tank has good damage ) , Hurricane ( very fast good dps gunboat with good tank very good ship ) , Typhoon ( very versatile drones guns and missiles very fast for its class and durable requires many skills to work properly can fit ewar ).
As you can see i didnt go more after t1 and and after tier1 bs he will know by then what to expect and decide. Dont flame there are just my opinions and experience. When i write something is good or versatile that i compare to its class otherwise we could only say bc and battleships but it is boring to fly only 2 types of ships anyway. Dont flame on moa and omen they are not bad at all in FW for sniping out frigates and destroyers and they are very cheap :)
